Excavations of potsherd, flint and bones give evidence of human presence since at least the Neolithic period. At the end of the 19th century, the depopulation of the countryside affects Montségur and the old abandoned village fell into decay (only remains Saint Felix chapel, 11th century). The vast plateau of sandstone favours the culture of truffles and ensures Montségur reputation in the Drôme department.
